crown (interlude)

been a hot minute. a few ideas here and there: still, nothing moved me enough to bring it here. i’ve got a few projects in motion that will land a spot on the site at some point. inspiration will strike and i’ll expend some energy here when they hit the sweet spot.

in the meantime, kendrick dropped a new album and i’ve spent the better part of 36 hours sitting with it. my goal in this first deep dive is to not judge it and instead ride with it. let’s see where this takes me kind of approach. if nothing else, every kendrick album is a fully fleshed out thought that i try to give the respect it deserves.

also, let’s not get to crazy. he’s a dude, i’m a dude, and i bet sometimes those closest to him get frustrated with his bullshit just like the rest of us. homie does have a pulizer though, so perhaps a bit more immortal than most.

mr. morale isn’t necessarily the most fun rapper to listen to. as an example, i prefer the kick in the door wavin’ the 44 energy of run the jewels more. he’s more challenging than most: his accents, choice of topic, and any number of things require me to be in the right mood to fully enjoy him.

one thing he is though is my cultural venn diagram. every album he drops has a way of level setting my understanding of our culture at that point in time. in so many ways i feel validated and then immediately challenged when i hear his music for the first time. his cauldron of pessimism/mental illness/hopefulness is a gift from god. <lowercase g> #nocaps

this album is no different.

one love,

james

ps…..at the end of a long week, i think i just might play this song on repeat for my friday afternoon commutes home as i charge into the weekend to be as lazy as possible.

you walk around like everything is in control
favor come with favors and you can’t say no
go out the way to make the coin available
that’s what i call love
the closest ones afraid to say they need some time
the turnaround is life or death, but you don’t mind
go out the way to say you made the compromise
that’s what i call love

but the time it’ll come to not be there when somebody needs you
you say no and all you’ve done gives them amnesia
one thing I’ve learned, love can change with thе seasons

and i can’t please еverybody
no, i can’t please everybody
wait, you can’t please everybody
no, i can’t please everybody
i can’t please everybody
